What the Future Holds
I have requested seven books from the public library. They’re currently checked out, so I’ve been put on the wait list — “on hold.” I love to do this — put books on hold and see which one the library surprises me with first. I like the mixture of surprise and anticipation. Plus, it’s cheaper than buying the book myself. I have been the victim of impulse purchases in the past. One turned out to be horrific – it was Robert Ludlum’s ”The Ambler Warning.” I’ve written about that here and on the BookList.
The waiting list is kind of long for a couple of them. I’m No. 15 in line for “The Diana Chronicles.” Though I guess the idea of a long wait is relative. I have been No. 48 before.
Here’s what the future looks like:
- “The 6th Target” by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
- “Ghostwalk” by Rebecca Stott
- “On Chesil Beach” by Ian McEwan
- “The Diana Chronicles” by Tina Brown
- “The Dark River: Book Two of the Fourth Realm” by John Twelve Hawks
- “Billion-Dollar Kiss” by Jeffrey Stepakoff
- “The Manny” by Holly Peterson
I’ve also borrowed Khaled Hosseini’s “A Thousand Splendid Suns” from someone. And I’m currently reading Jack Valenti’s memoir, “This Time, This Place,” and “Mockingbird,” an unauthorized biography of Harper Lee written by Charles Shields. I’m suddenly swamped with choices! Feel free to share what you’re reading in the comments.

I love putting books on hold! Currently, I’m 973 for the Thousand Splendid Suns (down about 100 spots from last week) and about 143 for Chesil Beach. =)
Such a long list of people waiting for books in your area, Holly! You know, I thought about you when I wrote this post — I remember hearing you speak of these sky-high numbers (No. 973!!) on previous occasions.
I love my public library. I’m looking forward to the Diana Chronicles, too.
